Lot traceability is the ability to link a specific production lot or batch of components, materials, or parts to the finished assemblies they were built into, and to trace those items back to their origin. It works by capturing identifiers — typically manufacturer name, lot code, date code, and incoming order data — when material is received, then recording which lots are consumed in which work order, batch, or serial-numbered product. That record lets a manufacturer contain nonconforming material, investigate failures, detect counterfeit parts, and scope recalls to only the affected lots.
Lot traceability is the entry point of the broader traceability standard IPC-1782, whose most basic level essentially answers which lot of components went into which batch of products. In space-hardware workmanship it appears as a concrete requirement rather than a defined term: NASA-STD-8739.4A directs that lot traceability be maintained between the contacts crimped into a connector and the sample contacts pulled for destructive crimp testing, so the pull-test results validate the same lot that flew. IPC-D-620A similarly points space and military cable and harness work to a Supply Chain Traceability Program in accordance with IPC-1782.
